This classic recipe for sugar cookies is just right for decorating.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy;add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  2. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat well.
  4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line several cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Roll out the dough on a well floured surface 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and carefully transfer to the baking sheets.
  7. Bake 6 to 8 minutes, taking care not to let the cookies brown. Cool completely before decorating.
