Instead of making your 4th of July guests the usual beef burgers on the grill, mix up your Independence Day menu by serving this assortment of boldly-flavored sliders made with beef, lamb and turkey.

Turkey sliders

5-Spice turkey sliders

Yields 10

Make your 4th of July mini burgers healthy, sweet and savory by swapping in lean ground turkey for the beef and combining Chinese 5-spice, hoisin and mango flavors in between the toasted buns.

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons Chinese 5-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • A few grinds black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 12 mini burger buns, split, toasted
  • 1 mango, pitted, peeled, cut into thin strips
  • Lettuce leaves

Directions:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, 5-spice powder, salt, pepper, sesame oil, onion and cilantro.
  3. Use your hands to form 2-ounce portions then press into patties. Use your thumb to press an indentation on the top of each patty.
  4. Oil the grill grate and place the patties on the grill. Close the grill lid and cook for 4 minutes. Flip and grill, covered, for 4 more minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, whisk together the hoisin and mayonnaise in a small bowl. Spread the mayonnaise mixture on the buns.
  6. Set the burgers on the bottoms of each bun. Top with the mango strips, lettuce and the top halves of the buns. Serve immediately.

Chipotle beef sliders

Yields 12

Give your typical hamburger recipe a spicy update by making mini burgers featuring chipotle, red onion, cilantro and tortilla chips.

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • A few grinds black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chipotle in adobo sauce from a can, minced
  • 1/4 cup minced red onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
  • 12 small slices pepper Jack cheese
  • 12 mini burger buns, split, toasted
  • Mayonnaise
  • 12 large tortilla chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the beef, salt, pepper, chipotle, onion, garlic, and cilantro, mixing well with your hands.
  3. Form the beef into 2-ounce portions and press into patties. Use your thumb to make an indentation on the top of each patty.
  4. Oil the grill grate and place the sliders on the grill. Close the grill lid and cook for 4 minutes. Flip the burgers and grill, covered, for another 4 minutes or until the burgers are cooked through to desired doneness. During the last minute of grilling, place the cheese on top of the burgers so it can melt.
  5. Spread the buns with mayonnaise and place a burger on the bottom halves of each bun. Top each burger with a chip then carefully set the top halves of the buns in place. Serve immediately.

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the lamb, curry, salt, pepper, green onion, mint and lemon zest.
  3. Use your hands to form 2-ounce portions and press into patties. Use your thumb to press an indentation on the top of each patty.
  4. Oil the grill grate and place the patties on the grill. Close the grill lid and cook for 4 minutes. Flip and grill, covered, for another 4 to 5 minutes or until the burgers are cooked through.
