Warm, comforting stews
Stew - or soup?
Stews differ from soups in thickness, content and quantity of solid ingredients. You can make a stew and a soup with a very similar list of ingredients, but the stew will ultimately be heartier, thicker and usually richer.
Stew is a simple, satisfying dish
Making a delicious stew is not hard. Many stew recipes are just good jumping off points for your own ideas. You can toss in whatever you like meats, most veggies and some stock. Then simmer away, correct seasonings and serve up a hearty, filling meal.
Give your stew a side
We like to serve stew with biscuits or cornbread (and often a good salad on the side) but stews are wonderful over egg noddles, with dumplings, or even a just a hearty slice of multi-grain bread. You can even ladle stew into freshly baked popovers. At the holidays, my husband makes a small German dumpling called spaetzle to go with our traditional Christmas day lamb stew.
